Counseling Reflection
I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Wisconsin since 2008. I have worked in private practice, state vocational rehabilitation, and county government. Primarily, I have worked with clients who suffer from the impact of trauma. Coming into the program as an experienced counselor, I was excited to “revamp” my skills and learn new methods to use with clients. I added to my skillset in more ways than I could realize.
Instructors and supervisors encouraged me in my counseling skills. As peers reviewed my counseling videos, I received a lot of affirmation about my calm demeanor, my ability to integrate my faith into the process, and be attuned to the client. I also received helpful feedback about sometimes letting the session wander and, at times, veering myself into giving too much advice. I have become mindful of this feedback and have incorporated it into my practice with clients.
I have appreciated the consistent modeling of counseling skills from each and every one of my professors. One of the most impactful meetings I had with a professor throughout my program was a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Bohecker. I was struggling to grasp an assignment in her Qualitative Research course and was getting frustrated. She called me up to lean into my calling and eradicate my inner critic, which she experienced as quite loud. I appreciated her directness. I may have been put off by it at first, but God really used that short meeting to help me do some much-needed personal work on this inner critic. Ultimately, I feel confident this has significantly helped me to show up for my clients more fully.
